THE JAMES GANG
Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or their books. My March James Gang interviewee, Harlequin Blaze author Tawny Weber, is the first author I've interviewed who has written a character perfect for the James Gang: her latest hero, Max St. James, in Breaking the Rules.
1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?
My adorable husband's name is James, and he's ex-Army and was a wonderful resource for Breaking the Rules, so St. James is a nod to him. Not that I'm saying he's a saint or anything, but he's really, REALLY cute.
2. Tell us about your tenth Harlequin Blaze, Breaking the Rules.
Subject: Max St. James, U.S. Army Sergeant First Class.
Current Status: On leave after a year in Afghanistan.
Mission: Take some R & R. Check up on a buddy's little sister.
Obstacle: Sophia Castillo. Independent, stubborn…and hot enough to make him forget she's anybody's "little sister"!
Max may be off duty, but he still has one last job to do. He's promised to look in on—but not fool around with!—his best friend's kid sister. Only once he meets Sophia, all thought of keeping his hands to himself go out the window.
Sophia, however, has different ideas. A recent widow, the last thing she needs is another man telling her what to do. Even if that gorgeous man leaves her drooling in a puddle of lust...
It's a battle of wills. Who will end up on top? Max breaks every rule in the book to keep Sophia in his bed. After all, all's fair in love and war. And Max is counting on life with Sophia being a little bit of both.
3. Tell us about your upcoming release, Just For The Night.
Just For The Night is out in May. The blurb is:
Things to Do in Blackout…
Power outages happen, and you have to be prepared. After all, you could be trapped somewhere—like in an empty store—with your ex.
Who is still irresistible. And hot.
And who knows how to make the most out of a dark situation...
Checklist for: Larissa Zahn
- First aid kit (With condoms. Be prepared. Very, very prepared.)
- Someone you're still overwhelmingly into (Jason Cantrell, I'm looking at you.)
- Plenty of time in the dark (Read: hot nookie. Lots of it.)
The ability to walk away without regrets in the morning... (Uh oh!)
24 Hours: Blackout
No lights. No power. And no holding back…
4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?
The general message in my stories is empowerment through the power of love. I try to create strong characters who have issues that the relationship brings front and center, which follows that the relationship then heals. Because I write Blaze, my stories are very sexy. My writing style leans toward humor. So if you combine them all, you have strong relationships in fun, sexy books.
5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?
My current favorite is definitely Max St. James. I just loved writing him. He's honorable and hunky and has such a fabulous sense of humor. He's faced with problem after problem, and manages to juggle them all and still get his way. Ya gotta love that in a guy.
6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?
I love sharing stories that make readers feel good. I've been inspired by so many books and authors over the years. Inspired to expect more out of my relationships. Inspired to believe in love. Inspired to dig deeper and be stronger. My goal with every story I write is to offer that same inspiration to my readers.
7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?
I received the CataRomance Reviewer's Choice award just this week for my 9/10 book, Riding The Waves, which was a lovely surprise. On the same day, I received a lovely review from Long and Short Reviews that I was so pleased with:
"Breaking the Rules is total romantic entertainment with a hero and heroine I really enjoyed getting to know. I don't think Ms. Weber missed a trick in bringing her characters to life for her readers and I had a great time. Who knew an art gallery could be so chaotic and fun?"
Needless to say, that was a pretty good day, news-wise.
8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?
My brand is "Hot, Sassy Romance…it's all about the sexy attitude."
My day-to-day promotion is through my Facebook page and my blog, but for books I usually do a blog tour and an online party of some sort. I'm always looking for a new way to promote, new things to try and bring my story to readers' attention.
9. What is your next project?
I'm currently working on the second book in my "Undercover Ops" series, which will launch in December, 2011. The first is titled Sex, Lies And Mistletoe, the January release is Sex, Lies And Midnight and the third will be out in February, 2012 and is titled Sex, Lies And Valentines. The series is about an FBI task force and a family of con artists and so far, I'm loving it.
10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?
My favorite bit of advice is some that I always try to follow: If your dreams are worth believing in, they are worth putting in the work to achieve.
Thank you, Tawny! Next month I'll interview HQN and Medallion author, Judith James.
