The James Gang

August James Gang

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My August James Gang interviewee is multi-published author, Sandy Loyd!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?

James is the third book in the California series, and it was his story. I’m sure I could have picked a sexier title or a more traditional one for a contemporary romance, but I just couldn’t do it. James is special to me, even though he’s a typical guy who can’t commit. He was with the character in the first book for several years, so he got points for trying. Still, he could be the poster boy for that book, He’s Just Not Into You. Because of that, he was a hard hero to write.

2. Tell us about James.

Here's the blurb:

James Morrison is a man women love. Good-looking. Talented. Great fun to be with. And of course he loves women. But he has one flaw. He can’t commit.
Samantha Collins is determined not to make the same mistakes her mother made…no ambition, living day-to-day off the government and loving the wrong, loser men who only brought on more misery. Since the age of 16, she’s had her life outlined better than any AAA roadmap. Her plans include marrying Charles Winthrope III and bearing Charles Winthrope IV in three years.

Sam always thought she had too much sense to fall for James when he tries to help her improve her relationship with Charles, but she tumbles hard. He’s sexy, fun and likes to play, and he’s never had to work to keep any woman. Until Sam, who backs away when she realizes she’s no better than her mother, falling in love with James who’s not offering commitment.

James’s and Sam’s story is the third in the California series of friends caught in a time warp. They can’t move on because they are stuck on their idea of their perfect dreams. But sometimes life works in mysterious ways and they are forced by circumstances to change.

3. Tell us about your upcoming release(s) or current release(s).

Right now I’m in the middle of releasing a new series that starts off with a time-travel romance. Time Will Tell is the first story in the Timeless series. It’s followed by two historicals – Games and Temptation – that are soon to be released and a couple of contemporaries that have yet to be written.

Here's the cover and blurb for Games:

Life is but a game to be played and all the characters are playing theirs in different ways. The principal game that Giselle Franklin and Simon Harrington engage in is the one of seduction and love. Neither has any idea how quickly flirtatious fun evolves into something more serious…and more deadly.

Simon Harrington, a US Marshall on special assignment for President Grant, loves the excitement and the danger his job provides and has no intentions of being tied down with love and a family. He’s come to Louisville to investigate a series of incidents involving the new thoroughbred racetrack being built. It’s up to him to ensure that the first running of the Kentucky Derby will take place without a hitch.

Giselle Franklin, a coquettish French American whose self-appointed task is to reel in every available man in the area, also craves excitement and adventure. She’s determined to help Simon, but doing so only lands her into bigger trouble.
Twists and turns abound in this fun, fast-paced, suspense-filled story where Giselle and Simon work to stay a step ahead of another, more devious game player intent on ending their journey to finding love and happiness.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

I’ve often wondered about this. After much thought, I’ve decided I do have a core story or theme. It’s of characters (be it male or female) who find themselves and come to accept that they are okay just the way they are. They have to learn to accept who and what they are before they can find love, if that makes sense.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

This is a really hard question because I love all my characters. I liken it to how a mother feels about her children. They are all different and loveable for different reasons. If I were to pick a favorite, I’d have to say that the two characters in Games are my favorite. They are both game players who met their match.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Getting to tell the story my way. I love creating.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve won several awards as an unpublished author. James won first place in the Sensual Contemporary category in Where the Magic Begins, a contest put on by Romance Writers, Inc. Now that I have achieved PAN [Published Author Network] status with RWA [Romance Writers of America], as a self-published author with Winter Interlude, the first story in the California series, I plan to enter the RITA [RWA's top award for romance novels] contest.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

It’s not easy. I have been lucky and have gotten enough reviews on Winter Interlude to advertise on Bookbub and ENT (eReaderNewsToday). I’ve done other ads for other books on ENT because I have enough reviews on them. I’m still building my brand and collecting reviews. The most difficult thing to overcome as an author is being in obscurity. If no one knows about my books, they can’t read them. Competition is fierce. I wish it was a faster process, but I do see progress.

9. What is your next project?

I’m actually now working on the fourth story in the California series. Mary Ann Murphy, a character introduced in James, has met her match in Kyle Donovan.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

The one quote I believe in and remember when things get tough is “Just Do It,” like the Nike ad says. I guess I could revise it a little and say “Just Write It.” Write and then write some more. By doing that, a person can’t help but get better.

Thank you, Sandy! My September James Gang interviewee will be paranormal romance and urban fantasy author, A.C. James!
