The James Gang

THE JAMES GANG

January James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. My January James Gang interviewee is mystery author, R. Franklin James!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?

James is my married name. My husband is from Tennessee where his family has lived near a little town called Oakland, for decades.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write amateur-sleuth mysteries.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

The idea for my second book in the Hollis Morgan mystery series, Sticks & Stones, originated with “Sticks and Stones can break my bones….” Despite what the old children’s rhyme says, words can cause grievous harm. A lesson ex-con Hollis Morgan, a casualty of her deceased ex-husband’s white collar crimes, knows all too well. Now she hopes to clear the name of a friend accused of libel by philanthropist Dorian Fields, a man whose charitable giving looks a lot like money-laundering. Only problem: the evidence has disappeared and her friend Catherine is found dead. At first thought a suicide, it is quickly disproved. Hollis’ friend was murdered.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

At the core, the Hollis Morgan mystery series is about second chances, except that not everyone deserves a second chance.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

The protagonist, Hollis Morgan, is my favorite heroine. She’s persistent and never gives up, particularly when it comes to setting the record straight.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

The creative aspect of inventing a story that captivates and draws the reader in.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

Sticks & Stones was just released earlier this year and has been submitted for a 2015 Edgar Award. It has all five-star reviews on Amazon. Additionally, it has garnered numerous positive media reviews.

My first book in the series, The Fallen Angels Book Club, has also received favorable reviews. Released in 2013, it provides Hollis’ compelling backstory and paves the way for the start of her way back to society.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

Marketing is definitely the weakest link in my author’s work chain. I’m an introvert by nature, and it is a major effort for me to think of places and persons where I can do heavy promoting. Right now I try to do at least one major signing a month, attend book conferences and fairs, and promote through social media:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/R-Franklin-James/273658892738172
Twitter: https://twitter.com/rfjbooks

9. What is your next project?

Promoting the release of book three (The Return of the Fallen Angels Book Club) by my publisher, in May 2015 and the completion of book four, The Trade List.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

Writing fiction is an art, not a science. Write what you like to read.

My favorite quote: "You can always tell what you believe by what you are getting."

Stop by next month, when my February James Gang interviewee will be romance and mystery author, Carolyn Hughey!
