The James Gang

October James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My October interviewee is author Patricia Preston, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?  That is, why did you pick Jesse James's wedding as part of your plot?

In Almost an Outlaw, published by Carina Press, I wanted to end the story with a wedding. I had done a huge amount of research on the James-Younger gang, the early years actually, so I read about his wedding and Zee. So in the plotting process, I decided to set the story during the week of his wedding in April. It plays a background role, and the story ends with his wedding. The novella even begins with the line: “I wouldn’t wait nine years on any man.” That was Darcy talking about Jesse’s long engagement to Zee.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write romance, both contemporary and historical setting. I also write humorous short stories. You can check them out here: Love Heals All and French Quarter Brides Humor and Happy Endings.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

My newest book, One Week In Your Arms, is mainstream contemporary romance filled with witty, charismatic characters. The fun, fast-paced plot features a secret baby, a billionaire baby daddy hero who needs a pretend girlfriend for a week, and a young doctor who is desperate to keep her child a secret. Unfortunately for the intrepid heroine, Marla, she needs money for her community clinic so she has no choice but to spend a week in paradise with the one man who can destroy her life. How can she say no?

One Week In Your Arms is the first book in Love Heals All series where romance causes havoc, heartache, and humor for a cast of unsuspecting doctors until they realize love heals all. Published under the Lyrical Shine imprint of Kensington Books, each book can be read as a stand-alone. They do feature the same location and continuing characters. The next book in the series is Everything His Heart Desires, coming in Jan 2017.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

In the romances, love matters most. All my stories have a positive message and a happy ending. Readers say I make them smile.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

I don’t think I really have a favorite. I love them all for different reasons. My character, Darlene, in the short comic stories seems to be the one whom everyone remembers. She’s my redneck Marilyn Monroe wannabe from the fifties. Lots of fun to write her character.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

I enjoy telling a story. I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid. It’s just something I have always loved. I can leave it for a few days, but then I miss it terribly and have to get back to it. I love the idea of entertaining a reader. That’s my goal.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I won the William Faulkner Award for Short Fiction and The Lone Star Writing Competiton for Historical Romance (that was the James story). I have a lot of reviews that I treasure. If you read a book you love, let the author know. That is such a boost.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

Mostly on social media and blogs. Mainly, I try to write the best book I can.

9. What is your next project?

I’m working on the third Love Heals All romance, tentatively titled Not Through Loving You. It is a fun story, and I have given the heroine, who is a country music songwriter, a quirk. She loves the Old West and Cole Younger. I’m actually putting my previous research to use here. LOL.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

“Enjoy life. Think of all the people who passed up dessert on the Titanic.” ~unknown.
