The James Gang

July James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My July interviewee is author Olivia Folmar Ard, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James, that is, why did you pick James as the last name for your character in The Partition of Africa?

I picked James as a surname for my character Claire because it has a classic elegance that fit her background and personality perfectly.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

Currently, I write new adult women's fiction, but I have projects in several other genres (including science fiction, fantasy, and dystopian) in the works.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release is The Marshall Plan, Book Two of The Bennett Series. Molly Marshall is happily married, incredibly rich, and up for a her dreams. Her reality is a different story. No one wants to pay her to write, and her student loans won’t let her work for free. Her job in a taco truck with her psycho roommate is the only escape she has from her lackluster fiancé, Gavin.

But when a scandal she failed to cover as a student surfaces again, Molly can’t resist the chance to put her name on the map. There’s just one problem: selling the story means hurting the people she cares about the most. With a dear friend’s trust and Gavin’s love at stake, Molly must make a choice. What will it be, her ambition or her heart?

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

While each book in The Bennett Series has its own story and message, I would say the prevailing theme would be love is a choice, not a feeling.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Claire James started out as a minor character in my debut novel, The Partition of Africa. I ended up rewriting her as a stronger, more important character because she grew on me over time. I didn't have big plans for her after that first book, but she refused to leave me alone! Now, she has her own installment in the series that I can't wait to share with you all in December.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

I love the chance to connect with others through my stories. Nothing makes me happier than someone telling me they had an emotional experience or revelation while reading my book.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

This review [of The Marshall Plan] from the wonderful readers at Whispering Stories warms my heart every time I read it!

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

As much as possible, I try to engage with people on social media. Getting to know my audience is just as important to me as making sales.

9. What is your next project?

Claire's story, This Dread Road, is currently in edits and will be published this December. I'm also working on a Christmas chick-lit short called 'Tis the Season, which will be available on Kindle Thanksgiving weekend!

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?
