The James Gang

April James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My April interviewee is romance author Nikki Lynn Barrett, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why Jameson?

I picked the name Jameson for my character to come up with something different. Honestly, I think it just popped into my head. There wasn't a rhyme or reason. I liked the name and, therefore, Jameson Grant (The Melody In My Head hero) was born.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write a bunch of everything. I'm published in contemporary romance with suspense elements. I do have one paranormal novella that I wrote and published, although the anthology it was in came down, but we're relaunching with it soon.

3. Tell us about your latest release(s).

Queen Of My Heart is featured in the [ebook] box set, Love Notes. Queen Of My Heartis the first book in my brand new "Life Won't Wait" series. I'm so excited for this one! Tucker and Quinn's story might have to go down as one of my favorites. I try not to play favorites, but these two hold a special place in my heart.

Queen Of My Heart blurb:

When the next King of country music offers to take you under his wing, what's a girl to do?

Pinch herself, of course. Repeatedly. Then take the offer!

Quinn Winters is tired of being the actress known for the most killed-off characters. After discovering her love of music when in her last role she portrayed a country singer on a daytime soap opera, she's making a much needed change in her life. Quinn is unprepared for the demands and expectations needed to succeed in Music City. One pleading call from her sister puts her in an all-too-familiar, but unwanted position.

Five years ago, Tucker McGinnis auditioned for a reality singing show, never expecting to win. His sudden fame and popularity came as a major surprise. After a multi-platinum debut, his second album is suffering the dreaded sophomore jinx. His musical muse becomes elusive when guilt plagues him over an accident which affects his family. He is blown away by Quinn when he overhears her audition at his record label, singing his most personal song.

An attraction builds, and a connection through music is formed. But when life gets in the way, Tucker makes another offer - a temporary marriage that will benefit both of them, until things become too real.

Two souls destined for the stage, two hearts blending together to create beautiful music as individuals, but even better as country music's next power couple - if they can shed the images of who they used to be.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

Yes. I tend to take on a lot of challenges. My characters usually have a lot stacked against them. I started out with a single mom who struggled to let anyone in because of her ex husband's years of treating her horribly. I have a character who suffered from PTSD after being one of two survivors of a plane crash. The other survivor, a girl he saved, suffers from traumatic brain injury. I have a country singer trying to make a comeback, but she has anxiety and stage fright after a long hiatus away. In Offbeat, my May 31st release, the heroine is a paraplegic drummer. I write these kinds of characters because I have met inspirational people with the odds stacked against them and I admire the heck out of them.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Oh, this favorite question again! It's seriously like picking a favorite child! (And I only have one of those!) LOL. I'm going to cheat - I have a top three right now:

I. Quinn and Tucker from Queen Of My Heart. As for the why - well, I don't know how to explain it without spoiling things. Both characters are trying to find themselves after a rough upbringing. They complement each other well once they finally break down the walls.

II. Becca and Hunter from the "Masterpiece" trilogy. The why: Becca (she's the one who suffers from a traumatic brain injury) was created by inspirations from two of my best friends. One has long-lasting effects from when she was hit by a car at the age of seven. The other is completely blind. Ever since meeting them, we've formed a bond and I don't know where I'd be without them. And Hunter...(he's my PTSD hero) never gives up even though he's got some of his own dysfunction.

III. Matt and Kyra from Fallen Idol. The why - I just adore these two. Opposites attract. Kyra broke out on the music scene at fourteen and hit the top of the charts. There was an accident and she left the spotlight. She met Matt when she came back to Texas to see her family. Matt....oh, where do I even start with him? He's a single father, jaded about musicians and relationships, but he's one of the nicest guys in the world. I loved their relationship so much that they're getting a follow-up in Skyrocket (a "Love and Music in Texas" novella).

6.what do you enjoy most about being an author?

Touching people's lives with my words. I write because it's what I know. It's a part of me. To know people love my stories and re-read them....that's a feeling I can't even begin to put into words.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

Here is a snippet of a Queen Of My Heart review from a reader via Goodreads: "This book was both heartbreaking and heart-mending. My emotions were all over the place when I was reading this, which is one of the things I like best when I read Nikki’s books. Quinn and Tucker’s story is wonderful and if I weren’t already a fan of Nikki Lynn Barrett, this book would certainly make me one."

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

It varies. Facebook parties, boxed sets, advertisements....but the biggest one is to continue to build up my backlist by writing the next book.

9. What is your next project?

Currently I'm about to wrap up the first draft of Offbeat ("Love and Music in Texas" series #5). Then I'll be working on About Damn Time ("Life Won't Wait" series #2) and some bonus material for a trilogy bundle. My 2016 is about to get crazy in terms of releases! :)

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

If you have a dream, go for it. Don't give up. Don't get discouraged.
