The James Gang

June James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. My June James Gang interviewee is romance author, Michele Shriver, who has a character just right for the James Gang!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James? Why did you pick Landon James Grayson as the name of your hero?

I didn’t really set out to do it, it just kind of happened. It’s my nephew's middle name and something that pairs well with virtually any first name or last name. It’s versatile. And I don’t like having the same number of syllables in a first and middle name, so with Landon as my character’s first name, James was a great fit for the middle name.

2. Tell us about the book Landon James Grayson is in.

Landon is my hero in my current release, a new adult romance titled Love & Light. He’s a college freshman and a pitcher on the school baseball team. His world isn’t perfect, though. He lost his mother a few years ago and still struggles with that. He meets a fellow student who is dealing with loss and grief as well. It’s a sweet romance. Here’s the blurb:

Kori Walsh knows all about the darkness in the world. After watching her mother succumb to illness, Kori sank into a deep depression that she can’t seem to snap out of, no matter who tries to help her.

As the star pitcher on his college baseball team, Landon James Grayson is enjoying life as a big man on campus and all of the perks that come with it. He has plenty of girls vying for his attention, so why is he so drawn to the moody, sullen girl who claims not to be interested but still keeps showing up to watch practice every day?

As he gets to know Kori, Landon is struck by how much they have in common and he sets out to cheer her up. Can Landon show Kori that there is light after darkness, and if he does, will love blossom?

3. Tell us about your upcoming release(s).

Love & Light is my brand new release. Next in line is probably the second book in my "Men of the Ice" series about the players on the San Antonio Generals hockey team. The first book, Playing for Keeps, is out now and will be featured in a boxed set of sports romances this summer. I am hoping to release book 2, Crossing the Line, about that same time.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

Not necessarily, but I like to write about real-life issues and all of my characters have overcome or have to overcome some sort of struggle or personal challenge in their road to happily ever after. I’ve written about addiction, coming to terms with sexuality, depression, grief and loss, etc. So if there is a theme, I guess it would be triumph over adversity.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

I thought Landon’s father, Ben, the hero in Starting Over, was my favorite along with his new love, Liz. But Landon now holds a special place in my heart. Really, all my characters are like children to me and it’s hard to name a favorite.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Creating new worlds and new characters and being able to bring their stories to life. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing I have created these characters and that people enjoy reading about them.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve never really submitted my books to be eligible for awards. I’m grateful for every positive review I’ve received, that my reader base seems to expand with each release and that I have people looking forward to my next book.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

Self-promotion is hard and not something I am a natural at. I think it’s very hard to get books noticed these days, especially if you don’t want to be obnoxious and spam people. I have a website and a Facebook page and am trying to get a street team going. Along with a website for my series that I have a new personal assistant working on with me.

9. What is your next project?

Book 2 in the "Men of the Ice" series and more planned after that. My project list changes frequently based on what my muse wants to do, but I am heavily focused on the series right now.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

I like to open all of books with a quote that relates to the story. This is the one for Love & Light, Landon and Kori’s story:

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” - Desmond Tutu
