The James Gang

December James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My December James Gang interviewee had a conflict, so as a last-minute emergency replacement, I'm interviewing me!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?

When I chose my pen name, I wanted to honor the love and support I receive from my husband James, so I combined my first name and his first name into "Marcia James." When I Googled that pen name in 2001 before I bought my website domain name, I was only one of two "James" romance writers whom I could locate online. Now there are so many James authors, I interview a different one each month on my website.  ;-)

2. Which of your books' characters are your favorites?

That's a really tough question! All of my heroes and heroines have become friends as I wrote their books. But I guess my favorite hero is Dalton Cutter from At Her Command because the journey to his happily-ever-after is the hardest won of any of my heroes. My favorite heroine is Dr. Ally Skye from Sex and the Single Therapist. She's strong and confident, but she knows her limitations when it comes to her amateur sleuthing.

3. Tell us about your Christmas novella.

Heating Up the Holidays is about rediscovering your soulmate. Here's a short blurb:

When single dad Chris Spencer returns home with his young daughter, he's not looking for a second chance with his first love. And the last thing Nicky Paxton needs during the hectic holiday is her high school heart-breaker. But thanks to a hairless dog and a lonely child, they might just get their Christmas desires.

4. Where did you get the idea for Sex and the Single Therapist?

I've always enjoyed reading both romances and cozy mysteries, so I decided to write a comic romantic mystery series featuring a sex therapist amateur sleuth. Since I love visiting Las Vegas—and the party town lives up to its "Sin City" nickname—it seemed the perfect place to set the series. Plus I can write off my "research trips" to Vegas to play video poker.  ;-D

Dr. Ally Skye works as an unofficial consultant for the Vegas police department, much to the dismay of her boyfriend, Detective Zack Crawford. I really enjoy pairing the sexually liberal Ally with the just-this-shy-of-prude Zack. She's having a great time loosening him up.  ;-)

5. Rumor has it there's something hidden in the "Dr. Ally Skye" series' titles.

Yes, the titles offer a clue as to the order of the books. The "single" in Sex and the Single Therapist is a hint that it's book one in the series. The second, which is due out in 2014, will be titled, Death and the Double Entendre—with the "double" a clue to book two. Murder and the Ménage à Trois—with "trois" meaning "three"—will be book three.

6. Why is there a Chinese crested hairless dog in all of your books?

In At Her Command, my first published book, I created Smokey, the Chinese crested DEA drug-sniffing dog. And he was so popular, he became my author logo. There's just something about tiny cresteds that is so silly and so striking at the same time. Plus I love having a big, tough Alpha hero bond with a tiny dog. So cresteds became my Hitchcock (who was in all of his movies). There's a crested in every one of my books.

7. Why is Love Unleashed a little hotter than your other books?

Love Unleashed is a novella I wrote as a donation to an America Heart Association fundraiser on the All Romance eBooks (ARE) website. They only accepted X-rated and "hard-R-rated" stories for the fundraiser. My books are usually R-rated, but I had to write a little hotter to meet their hard-R requirement. Still there is the same humor and romance in Love Unleashed that's found in all of my books.

8. What are you currently working on?

In addition to writing Death and the Double Entendre, I'm revising my first manuscript for publication in 2014. Southern Exposure is a comic romantic mystery about an investigative reporter who goes way outside her comfort zone to get the big story that will make her career. Here's the blurb:

The naked truth…
Who’s playing nasty practical jokes on the rich and famous at Eden Bay, the notorious "clothing optional" Caribbean resort? Wanting out of her dead-end job, tabloid reporter Piper Loring goes undercover to investigate. The chance to write for a respected newspaper is worth risking sunburn on previously unexposed body parts. But can she stay focused on the job when faced with a seductive mystery man?

The bare facts…
Miami private investigator Jack Kendall is hired to catch the Eden Bay Prankster. The pay’s great, but would Sam Spade wear a thong bathing suit? First on Jack’s list of suspects is the shy, sexy brunette who uses props like tropical drinks to mask her toplessness. Jack sticks to Piper like a sweaty thigh to a beach chair and soon discovers his inability to carry a concealed weapon is the least of his worries.

9. What are your favorite social media sites?

Facebook is definitely my favorite, and I've been lucky enough to connect with several thousand pro-pet people on the site. They share the funniest animal memes and support rescue groups and causes such as breed discrimination. Facebook is always putting me in "Facebook jail" for Friending people too quickly, but I can accept Friend requests at

I'm just getting my feet wet in Twitter. I did tweet while at the Billboard Music Awards in Vegas last May, but I haven't gotten into the habit yet. Here's my Twitter URL:

Pinterest is just plain fun! I could spend hours checking out everyone's boards. I've started several boards for my books, and I've found the site is good for research as well. Here's my Pinterest page:

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

I don’t know who said it, but I love this quote: "My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog thinks I am."

My January James Gang interviewee will be author, Aiden James!
