The James Gang

December James Gang

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My December James Gang interviewee is multi-published author Lynn LaFleur, who has a hero perfect for the James Gang.

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James? E.g., Why did you pick James Parker as the name of the character in A Different Path?

I’ve always liked the name James, ever since I had a crush on a guy named James in high school. (Shh! Don’t tell him. He doesn’t know I had a crush on him.) I also wanted my hero to have a name that could work as a first name or last name, for plot purposes. James filled every requirement for my book.

2. Tell us about A Different Path.

A Different Path is one of the books in The Tarot Café series from Ellora’s Cave. It’s the story of Parker James Kendall, lead singer of The P.J. Kendall Band. His life has become a mess with too much booze, drugs, and women. When he wakes up in bed with two women and has no idea how he got there, he knows he has to change his life.

A chance meeting with Teanna Caldwell at The Tarot Café in Truckee, California leads him on a different path to a new life. Now using the name James Parker, he travels to Texas in search of Teanna. James has found his soul mate and the life he’s always wanted. But he wonders how long Teanna will love him if she discovers their relationship is built on lies.

3. Tell us about your current or upcoming releases.

My latest release is Always Room for Four from Ellora’s Cave. You can probably tell from the title that it’s about a foursome. It’s also the sequel to the very first book I had published by EC, The Birthday Gift.

Always Room for Four is the story of Patrick, the third person in The Birthday Gift’s ménage, and how he finds his soul mate. It’s the first time I’ve written a foursome. It was a load of fun. This book also contains the first female/female scene I’ve ever written.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

I can’t say there’s a particular theme in my books, other than love conquers all and everyone lives happily ever after. Well, after a few bumps along the way to that fairytale ending.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

I love all my characters (as most authors do), but I have to say I have two favorite heroes—James, mentioned above, and Zach from my book Rent-A-Stud, which is the first book in my Coopers’ Companions series about a male escort service. I love James because he knows he’s heading down the wrong path in his life and does whatever is necessary to change his life and himself for the better. I love Zach because he’s so romantic and charming. He falls in love with a woman ten years his senior, who worries the age difference will be a major problem for them. Zach sets out to prove her wrong, to show her their love is strong enough to overcome any obstacle. See, there’s that "love conquers all" thing again. ;-)

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

I love sharing my stories with readers. When someone takes the time to write to me and tell me she (or he) enjoyed one of my books, I smile for the rest of the day. I love creating the characters, figuring out their names, their occupations, where they live…everything about the process. There can’t be a better job in the world than being an author.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

No big awards, no special kudos. <sigh> I do receive very good reviews on my books, and that makes me proud. I’ve also been on Amazon’s bestseller lists several times with different books. It’s always a rush to see my name there.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I built my website ( and keep it regularly updated. Anyone who wants to know about me and my books, that’s the best place to look. I also have a page on Facebook ( and Twitter ( I belong to two author groups, The Sizzling Scribes and The Sirens of Sensual Romances. Both groups have websites that feature a page for each author, and newsletters. The Scribes also have a blog. There are seven of us and we take turns blogging every Sunday. I don’t think I could ever find enough to blog about every day or even once a week. Once every seven weeks, I can do.

I put out a monthly newsletter that features an interview with another author, excerpts, reviews, recipes, and lots of fun goodies. Call me crazy, but I love creating newsletters. I like being creative with graphics and looking for fun things to include. It took me several issues to come up with a format I really like. My 40th issue went out this month to my subscribers.

I’ve recently self-pubbed a couple of books that I’m happy to say are doing well. I’m hoping the low prices will draw people in and encourage them to give my other books a try. Then, of course, they’ll love my writing and buy all my books. ;-)

9. What is your next project?

I’m currently writing my next self-pubbed book titled Panties Optional, which should be available online by the 1st of December. After that, it’s another book for Ellora’s Cave, the 4th in my Coopers’ Companions series.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

I publish a writing quote in my newsletter every month, but my favorite quote has nothing to do with writing. I read this online several years ago and it stuck with me.

“A friend is someone who sees through you and still enjoys the view.” ~Wilma Askinas

Thank you, Lynn! My January James Gang interviewee will be Ellora's Cave "Blush" author Hetty St. James!
