The James Gang

July James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. My July James Gang interviewee is multi-published author Kendra James!

1. Lets get the most important question asked first: Why James?

I write romance under the pen name of Kendra James. The name has a special connection to a past love. My ancestry, though, is also Scottish with my maiden name being Wallace.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write romance, mystery, medical thrillers, YA [Young Adult], paranormal, and adventure. I also write children’s stories and poetry.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release, Without Consent, is a medical thriller about a serial killer excising women’s kidneys. This book is under my own name of Bev Irwin and has a book blurb from Lee Child and the late Michael Palmer. Below is the blurb.

She found the first she might be the next.

In South-Western Ontario, a crafty, vicious psychopath is at work excising the kidneys of the women he abducts. Doctor Claire Valincourt, recently jilted, finds his first victim and assists with the autopsy. But little does she know the killer has his sights on her, too.

Relationship-jaded Detective Gerry Rosko desperately searches for a serial killer who is on a quest of his own—the hunt for a perfect kidney for the terminally ill mother he tends. Will Rosko track him down before Claire becomes his next victim?

I do have another romance, City Slickers, finished and another, Cruising Hearts, almost finished. Both of these have protagonists with careers in medicine. Dangerous Waters is a pirate novella. These are all under my pen name of Kendra James.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

I love to add a touch of medical to my novels and also to delve into the psyche of my characters, especially my villains. I also like to do some paranormal as in my Ghostly Justice.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

I like my heroine in Without Consent, Doctor Claire Valincourt. She is smart, courageous, vulnerable, and is willing to fight for something she believes in. Both her and her romantic interest, Detective Gerry Rosko, have had failed relationships but are willing to try again. They will both be appearing in my next two medical thrillers.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Playing with words in a way that makes a reader want to keep turning the pages and want to read my next book.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos youd like to tell us about?

Yes. I have won several awards for my writing.

When Hearts Collide came second in the Heart of the Rockies Contest in the contemporary category.

Missing Clayton, a suspense novel, came second in the TARA [contest] for women’s fiction and third in the Gateway to the Best [contest] in the suspense category.

Dangerous Waters received Honorable Mention in the historical category in the Wisconsin Romance Writers contest.

My YA/middle grade adventure novel, In His Father’s Footsteps, got Honorable Mention in the Writer’s Digest Competition.

I am very proud of some of the reviews I have received, especially the ones for Without Consent. Below are some of my favourites.

"A fine medical thriller." Lee Child, best selling author

"Without Consent is a slam-bang thriller--medical suspense at its very best. Bev Irwin knows how to generate unrelenting tension. Her writing is as sharp as a number 11 scalpel blade. Tightly plotted with characters who will stay with you long after the last page has been turned. Bev Irwin and her alter egos know their way around an autopsy table. This is a terrific read, and I highly recommend it to my fans." Michael Palmer, New York Times Best Selling Author of Political Suicide

"Gripping terror and exploding suspense...a can't put-it-down thriller." John Jeneroux, Crime Writers of Canada award winner

"There are enough twists and turns that I had trouble putting the book down, even for important things like going to the bathroom. The characterization is brilliant. Another spectacular psychological thriller from Bev Irwin." Regan, Reviewer

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I like to do book signings; even if I don’t sell many books at them, it is fun to meet readers and chat with them. I also like to go to conferences and meet other authors and readers. I’ve been on a couple of panels at conferences. I do blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and have been written about in a couple of local newspapers. The week beginning Dec 9th, I will be the featured author on Roger’s Television show, The Book Nook with Sarah Hilton.

9. What is your next project?

Kendra James has to finish Cruising Hearts and Dangerous Waters and send them out there with City Slicker.

Bev Irwin has to finish Taken, a book about fourteen-year-old boy who finds out his father is not dead and that his mother fled with him as a child. She also has to finish the next book featuring Doctor Clair Valincourt and Detective Gerry Rosko.

And so many others for both Kendra and Bev, but so little time.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom youd like to impart or a favorite quote?

Keep writing, take courses, learn your craft, join a writer’s group, go to writing conferences, but most of all, have fun...[and]...keep that pen moving.

Award-winning author, Kendra James/Bev Irwin, began her writing career at the tender age of eight with the publication of her poem about daffodils. She wrote poetry for many years while becoming a registered nurse, married, had three children. She worked in many areas of nursing. An avid reader, an injury gave her the time to delve into writing, and she began her first novel. Kendra/Bev lives in London Ontario with two cats and a mischievous puppy, named Shayla. She prefers spending time anywhere but in the kitchen.

Thank you, Kendra! My August James Gang interviewee will be paranormal author, Danielle James!
