The James Gang

April James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. My April James Gang interviewee is M/M erotica author, Joey Jameson!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why Jameson?

Jameson has always struck me as such a powerful name. I’ve been quite fascinated by Jenna Jameson, the porn star, over the years and have such a strong sense of respect for her. She’s such a Cinderella story, so to speak; come from nowhere and made such a name and reputation for herself in the Adult Industry. So I guess I owe my name to her. Joey Jameson has always had a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

My genre has always been M/M [Male/Male] erotica. It’s interesting really, because I never really started out with the intention of being an erotica writer; I just sort of fell into it. Someone once told me that a successful author will write what they know… So I guess it was no surprise that I found myself entangled in this particular genre.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Interview With a Porn Star book blurb:

Adison Snow is a God in the Adult Film Industry. With the body of an Adonis and the charm of a prince, he’s become somewhat of an icon in mainstream society, pushing boundaries and changing the way porn is regarded by people today. Intensely private, Adison has always shied away from interviews, preferring to remain a mystery in the eyes of the media…

Until tonight.

Maxfield Park is an up-and-coming magazine executive who’s been personally chosen by the elusive Adison Snow to conduct the porn star’s first ever interview. What secrets will he reveal? What dirt will he divulge? It is up to Maxfield to dig deep into the porn star’s psyche and figure out exactly how he got the world to drop to their knees. But the bigger question is whether Adison has the charm and the power to get heterosexual Maxwell to drop to his!

I actually wrote Interview with the Porn Star while on hiatus from another one of my current projects. My publisher approached me with this amazing idea to write a short story and speed track it in time for the December Kindle rush. I immediately jumped at the idea, and this story was just sort of born.

I had the idea to write a story about the most elusive and talked about Adult Film star and showcase him in such a mainstream manner that everyone and their mums would have heard of him. I wanted this main character to be such a household name, that no matter whom you were or what team you "batted for," you couldn’t deny his sex appeal.

It was meant as a toe-in-the-water kind of story; and I am quite excited about the prospect of turning it into a novel. There’s definitely more to come from Adison Snow in the future.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

Mystery and intrigue has always been my thing. I like to take the most innocent of concepts and turn it on its head. If you look at all my work collectively, you’ll see that the common themes all definitely center on relationships. Love, sex, betrayal and, above all, obsession are all present in my books. When I write, I want the characters and situations they face to be relatable; almost to the point where the reader sees a bit of themselves in the characters or can walk away and say "Hey, that happened to me once." But then, as a juxtoposition, I like to take these seemingly normal situations to the other extreme and force my audience to look at them from a completely different perspective, all the while considering their own lives differently as well. I’m not fully satisfied until I’ve got my reader squirming in their seats.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

There is a main character in my first novel, Candy from Strangers, that is me to a T. It’s somewhat embarassing to say that now, but I think when I started to write it, I had no intention of ever seeking to have it published. Then when the opportunity presented itself, I thought…Shit…I’ve just basically written myself into this book for the entire world to see. I ended up feeling rather exposed, especially considering what the character goes through in the book. So, yes, I do have a favourite. You’re probably wondering who the character is that I’m referring to, but let’s just leave it a mystery. More fun that way, right?

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

Writing to me has always been an escape. It’s a time when I can completely shut the world out and just dive into my subconscious and explore my deep, inner fantasies. When I write, there are no rules and certainly no limitations. I can be as crazy or as subdued as I want. What’s not to love?

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I think all authors have that one interview or review that they’ll always remember. And for me it was the first review I ever got for Candy from Strangers. I’ll never forget it. It was the first time someone other than a relative or close friend had ever given me constructive criticism, and it felt amazing. To know that someone out there had actually appreciated and understood what I was trying to write and was able to relate to something personal I had written… That was an incredible feeling.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

That is the hardest part about being an author. There’s no denying that promotion can be exhausting. I have a great publisher who does masses for me, so I have him to thank for all of this. All it takes is for one person to believe in you and the world is your limit!

9. What is your next project?

I’m currently taking my time working on a project called Twisted. It’s the story of identical gay twins who fall for the same guy. Expect the usual taste of sex and intrigue, with a bit of sultry deception thrown into the mix. I’m taking it slow to make sure I’m getting it right. I can’t wait to share it with the world.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

Writing should never seem like a chore. It’s an escape, and if it ever becomes boring, you’re doing something wrong.

Thank you, Joey! My May James Gang interviewee will be thriller author, Charles James!
