The James Gang

September James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. My September James Gang interviewee is Young Adult/New Adult author, Jamie Canosa!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?

Jamie is my real first name and it was given to me before I was born, so I can’t take too much credit for it. Though, I do like it.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write YA [Young Adult] and NA [New Adult]. Mostly contemporary romance, "Fight or Flight" series and the "Pieces" series, but I’ve also written a dystopian series, "Dissidence," and am currently in the middle of a paranormal series, "Resisting Atlantis."

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Falling to Pieces is the story of Jade, who suffers extreme self-esteem issues brought about by the verbal abuse of her alcoholic mother and narcissistic boyfriend. And Kiernan, who refuses to let her hide herself in the shadows.

Suffering the bitter tongues of her alcoholic mother and cruel boyfriend, Jade struggles just to look at herself in the mirror. She hates her life, her insecurities, her ineptitudes, but most of all...Jade hates herself. She wants nothing more than to disappear, and everyone seems happy to let her. Until Kiernan Parks moves back into town.

Jade’s been crushing on him ever since kindergarten, when his family moved away. But now he’s back, and looking better than ever.

Hiding is a way of life for Jade, but Kiernan insists on uncovering the real girl he sees trapped inside her. On drawing her out of her shell and showing her that she is someone worthy of love.

Together, they fight back the darkness she’s living in. But when they finally step into the light, will the secret Kiernan’s been trying to keep buried destroy Jade, once and for all?

For some people, happy endings are a fairytale.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

My contemporary novels focus on overcoming odds and learning to trust. All of my MCs [Main Characters] have faced some sort of experiences, whether it’s physical, emotional, or both, that have impacted not only their lives but their souls. Affecting them at a core level. My books are about finding a way, usually with a little help, to overcome those experiences and reclaim themselves and their lives.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

This is so, soo hard! I love every single one of my characters, but there are a few that have cemented themselves in my heart.

Jade ("Pieces" series) is one, mainly because I put so much of myself in her.

Caulder ("Pieces" series) is another, because although everything looks easy for him on the outside, it’s what he’s hiding underneath that’s tearing him apart, and he prefers to suffer in silence than burden anyone else with that. He breaks my heart.

But if I had to choose just one that touched my heart the deepest, I think it would be Dean from Sink or Swim ("Fight or Flight" series). His sheer determination to make everything good for everyone he cares about no matter the cost to himself...I fell for him while writing that story, and although I published it a while ago and have moved on since then, I still find myself thinking about him and Allie often.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

The freedom. The adventure. Every time you start a new story, it’s like setting out on a new journey. Things you’d never get to do in real life but can experience right alongside your characters. I don’t write books. They write themselves and just take me along for the ride. And I’m excited to see where they’ll go, every single time.

I’m also addicted to the raw emotion that can be poured out onto a page using nothing more than words.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

Fight or Flight won the contemporary category in the Blogger Book Fair last year.

And Falling to Pieces has been racking up the five-star reviews. I usually avoid reading them. Once I hit publish, I try to let a story go. But one particular review grabbed the hub’s attention, and he dragged me out of bed to see it. It wasn't long and flowery. It wasn't gushing with accolades. It was short and sweet. Eleven words. The first seven of which left me speechless.

This is what it said: "Better than The Fault in our Stars. Totally worth the tears."

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I do all my own promotion. Something I’m sadly not great at. I essentially use social media: Facebook, Twitter, and my blog for most of it. I love sharing teasers of my current WIPs [Works-in-Progress] and running giveaways. If you don’t follow me on FB [Facebook], hop on over to join in the fun J

9. What is your next project?

This is a year of wrapping up series. I am currently working on the third and final installment of the "Pieces"series, Pieces of my Heart. After which, I will be tackling the next book in the "Atlantis" series, Losing Atlantis, and the final book in the "Fight or Flight"series, Win or Lose.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

I don’t really believe too much in giving others advice. Everyone has their own process. Their own imagination. Their own way of doing things. And that’s part of what makes writing so special, no two authors are alike, and so no two stories are. The infinite possibilities are magical.

But if I were to tell other writers one thing it would be to do it for yourself. Write because you love to write. Write what you love to write. Don’t worry about sales, or profits, or marketing. If you have a passion for what you’re putting on the page, it will be reflected in all of those things.

And never give up!

Thank you, Jamie! My October James Gang interviewee will be suspenseful paranormal novel author, James DiBenedetto!
