The James Gang

THE JAMES GANG

Each month I interview an author or publishing insider who has “James” in his/her name. My September James Gang interview is with Avon author, Jaime Rush.

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?

When I went with a new publisher (Avon) and a new series, we decided it was best to take a pseudonym.  Though I was playing with a lot of names (it’s like naming a character only MUCH more important!), the name Jaime Rush kept coming back to me.  Because of that, I knew that must be the right name.  Then I realized that the name of my first hero (in my Tina Wainscott books) was Jamie, and the last hero was Rush!

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I have written 18 books of romantic suspense and some with paranormal elements, and my new books are paranormal romantic thrillers (think X-Files meets Lost).

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Out Of The Darkness:

In a flash, Zoe Stoker goes from tattoo artist to target of an assassin.  All her life she’s felt like a freak, and now the Offspring, people who also have remarkable psychic abilities, are her only hope.  The enemy grows more dangerous…and so do her feelings for one sexy loner as she gains command of her powers and loses control of her heart.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

This is book 2 of my series, though it should stand alone if you haven’t read the first book.  Themes that generally run through my books are accepting yourself, flaws and all, and opening your heart and taking a chance on love.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

There are always characters who touch me just a little deeper than the others.  Amy and Lucas, from book 1 (A Perfect Darkness) are two of these, and their relationship continues to evolve through the series, though more in the background.  I love Zoe and Rand’s emotional intensity.  They have a scene that just blew me away as I wrote it.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

The creation process.  I get to create people and situations, and I love that.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I've gotten lots of great feedback and reviews on A Perfect Darkness, including a buyer from a major bookstore chain.  It’s too early for contests.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I do a lot of promo on MySpace, which I enjoy.  My brand is my slogan, “Where X-Files meets Lost”, and I target people who watch the kind of shows and movies that sync with my books.

9. What is your next project?

More Offspring!  I’ve already written a novella, which comes out in an anthology in February with Lynsay Sands and Pamela Palmer.  Book 3 comes out in July 2010.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you'd like to impart or a favorite quote?

I always encourage people to follow their dreams...you never know what you’ll find!
