The James Gang

March James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My March interviewee is author Heather Boyd, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why did you pick the name "James" for your character in Just a Dream?

There are so many cool James… James Spader, James Bond, James Spader (I’m a huge fan). It’s also a period appropriate name for the regency, too, so that’s important. Plus the name can be shortened to Jimmy, which happened in my story, Just a Dream.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write romance, specifically English-set regency romance. I like to experiment so, aside from heterosexual couples, I also write gay, ménage and paranormal romance set in that era, too.

3. Tell us about Just a Dream.

Just a Dream cover

About Just a Dream—On the surface, Raphael and James have everything they need until James’ upcoming birthday forces both to reassess their friendship. Can a well-reasoned, sensible decision survive the revelation of unlimited passion? Just a Dream is a gay regency romance.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

Second-chance romance is a frequent theme in my books.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Ooh, that’s an awkward question. I don’t have favorite characters. If I did, they might stop talking to me. Every character holds a special place in my heart. It's like having children except they’ve never thrown up on me, so maybe I like them a bit better.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

So many things. Creating mayhem and chaos with every word, matchmaking on the page. Having a legitimate excuse to daydream is pretty cool. Talking to readers about characters as if they were real people always makes my day. Storytelling is a great profession.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I write to please myself first and foremost and don’t often enter contests. I simply love to tell stories. The reviews that mean the most to me are always from my readers.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I shout out about my new publication a little bit, and then go back to writing. In between I share my love of music, movies and the things that inspire me to write every day. I hope that resonates with other people.

9. What is your next project?

My current project is still a bit under wraps right now. I’m working hard on a new series that I’m not quite ready to shout about it, but it will be AWESOME. Hot and steamy regency romance my readers have come to expect from me.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

There is a song lyric by Neil Finn (lead singer of the band, Crowded House) that really appeals to me and makes writing sessions a total buzz. “When you’re in the moment everything you want is right.” When you keep that in mind, there is nothing your characters cannot get up to. I find the sentiment very freeing.
