THE JAMES GANG
Each month I interview a writer who has "James" in his/her pen name. My August James Gang interview is with Elle James.
1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?
I wanted something short starting with a J as that’s what my real last name starts with and James is my paternal grandfather’s first name.
2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?
I write romantic mystery/suspense, and I’ve written romantic comedy. Lately I’ve concentrated on the mystery side for Harlequin Intrigue.
3. Tell us about your latest release.
My latest release is a Harlequin Intrigue out in August called Under Suspicion, With Child. It’s book number 4 in the miniseries “The Curse of Raven’s Cliff”. Here’s the back cover copy for the book:
As a cop, his job was to capture the killer who’d stirred fear in the citizens of fog-shrouded Raven’s Cliff. But Andrei Lagios had his own agonizing reasons for bringing this criminal to justice. And the return of beautiful, pregnant Jocelyne Baker was a distraction he couldn’t afford. Yet the moment her life—and that of her unborn child—was threatened, he insisted on working undercover and being her personal bodyguard. Getting close to Jocelyne stirred a desire that pushed aside his pain. But the unrevealed secrets of her well-guarded past made him suspect there was more to this homecoming than she claimed.…
4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?
Romance and mystery are key elements in my Harlequin Intrigues.
5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?
One of my favorite heroines is from Dakota Meltdown. She had significant burn scars and had to overcome her fear of intimacy. I was burned badly as a child and still have large scars to prove it. She was a heroine of my heart.
6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?
I love to brainstorm new ideas, live the lives of other people in my books and create new worlds in which love means a happily-ever-after. I love it most when people laugh and cry at the appropriate places. It means I touched them in some way. It’s the best feel-good drug there is!
7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?
My first book published was a romantic comedy called To Kiss a Frog; it won the RWA Golden Heart for best Paranormal in 2004. My first two Harlequin Intrigues were Romantic Times’ Top Picks.
8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?
Because I write romantic mystery, suspense books, my tagline is “Escape with...Elle James”. It’s a play on the suspense and the ability to escape into a book for a few minutes/hours/days.
9. What is your next project?
I’m working on a couple continuities for next year as part of Harlequin’s 60th anniversary. I’m participating in the “Diamonds and Daddies” continuity and the “Kenner County Crime Unit” continuities. It’s an honor to be chosen for a continuity along with other fabulous authors.
10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?
If you’re a writer trying to break into the industry or a writer trying to keep your foot in the door and move up the food chain, always always always continue to WRITE, REVISE, SUBMIT. Don’t give up. If you’re a reader, keep reading! We writers love readers! We all started as readers and still are!
