The James Gang

June James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My June interviewee is author Carra Copelin, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why did you pick James as your character's name?

I use a lot of family names for my characters, both on my side and on my husband's side. This character, James Sheridan O'Donnell, is named for my Uncle Jim. I understand he was quite a little stinker as a child. My grandmother used to tell some cute stories.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

Historical and Contemporary Romance, Contemporary Romantic Suspense

3. Tell us about your latest release.

One of my latest releases is Angel and The Texan From County Cork, A Brides of Texas Code Series, Book 3. It takes place in North Texas in 1879, in one of the coldest winters on early records. Jamey (James) is the brother to Matelyn and cousin to Katie, the heroines in my two previous western historical books, Katie and the Irish Texan (1) and Matelyn and the Texas Ranger(2).

Angel and The Texan From County Cork Blurb:

Jamey O'Donnell loves his family but feels the need to once again answer the call to adventure. On his way to join the Silver Rush in Leadville, Colorado, Jamey stops to help his old friend, Will Rivers. When he finds out his friend has been killed, he seizes the opportunity to repay an old debt. He decides to stay to help the widow rebuild her life and find who murdered his friend. Can he ignore the long-buried emotions she brings to the surface and then walk away?

Angel’s second husband, Will Rivers, has been shot and killed, leaving her with an impossible dilemma. Either marry her neighbor to satisfy her husband’s debt or the stranger she shot in her barn who says he’s a friend. Which one does she trust? Will she be able to bury the feelings stirred by the stranger to live a life alone?

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

The theme in all my books is family, or rather love of family. My characters love each other and their family no matter what, warts and all. There also tends to be a secondary theme in my books, and that is weather—from rain, to snowstorms, to tornadoes, to hurricanes. I use the factual weather for the time period of the story.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Wow, what a tough question. I happen to like all my characters. [grins] They each have a special place in my heart, but I guess the true faves have to be Graeme McAlister and Maggie Benning from my first book, Code Of Honor, because they lived in my head the longest. I really hated to let them go.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

A lot of authors say they love being able to work from home in their PJs and work at their own schedules. I found out quickly, after I retired from my day job, that they were right! I really like being able to bring characters together in all situations and tell their stories.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

This past December, I participated in a ground-breaking project. Forty-five authors wrote books about American Mail-Order Brides in each of the fifty states. My book, Laurel: Bride Of Arkansas, American Mail-Order Brides, Book 25, performed the best of any of my books so far. She made it to #4 on Amazon Best Seller List, and I actually had an author ranking at #80! A major personal best.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

So far, I've promoted on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, on blogs, and paid for a few small ads.

9. What is your next project?

I'm pretty excited about my next project in that it's a sub-genre that's new for me. Faith and the Texas Lawyer, Book 4 in the Brides of Texas Code series, is a Time-Travel that takes Faith from present day back to 1900 Galveston, Texas. She's looking for love, romance, and a family of her own. And you know, there just happened to be a hurricane there that year, too.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

Believe in yourself and follow your heart. I have a bracelet I received recently that says, “She believed she could, so she did.” It's true.
