The James Gang

March James Gang

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My March James Gang interviewee is The Wild Rose Press author Babette James!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James?

I chose James for my pen name because it’s my husband’s first name and mine (almost). In real life, we’re Jim and Jamie and it occasionally amuses friends to tease us as James and James. Babette is my middle name and choosing it for my pen name delighted my mom. Always keep mom happy! The two names worked together, so it was an easy decision.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write contemporary romance and fantasy romance.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Clear as Day Cover

My debut release, Clear As Day, is a contemporary romance coming out April 4, 2012, from The Wild Rose Press, both in eBook and print. Here’s the blurb:

What’s a girl to do when her summer lover wants forever?

Haunted by dark memories of her parents’ volatile marriage, artist Kay Browning keeps her heart locked behind a free-spirit facade and contents herself with the comfortable affair she has every summer with easygoing photographer Nate Quinn.

The only trouble with her plan? This summer Nate’s come to Lake Mohave to claim the lover he can’t let go. He’s done with the endless traveling and settling for temporary homes and temporary loves. Kay’s always been more than just a vacation fling, and now he must convince this woman, who sees love as a course to certain heartbreak, to take that leap of faith and learn how safe love with the right man can be.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

It seems no matter the couple, my stories revolve on all kinds of friendships and the support that you get from them, from friends turning to lovers, and old friends that are closer than family, to discovering new friends. In Clear As Day, and the stories that I’m writing as sequels, each couple develops out of a core group of friends that vacation together each summer. Each story also explores questions of trust and the milestone transitions in life where the characters must let go of their pasts and take the risk to plunge into their new future.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

I love the heroes and heroines in each of my stories, so it’s hard to pick favorites. I adore Nate, his loyalty and his humor, and had so much fun writing him. I love Kay and all her caution and uptight habits she uses to hide her vulnerability and that she’s never chosen the expected routes in life but made her own. It was a delight to see their love story evolve. And the fun part is, since I’m writing sequels, I don’t have to say goodbye to them just yet.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

I enjoy the surprises of storytelling. I enjoy seeing a story grow out of a little idea, plots twist and turn, expand and shift, and how the characters grow and reveal their lives and find their happily ever after. I also love the wonderful, supportive friends I’ve made on this journey to publication.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve had two lovely reviews given to me so far:

CLEAR AS DAY is a story about two friends with benefits that are faced with the fears and uncertainties of taking their relationship to the ultimate level. I loved the way that Babette James handled the emotions and reality of Kay and Nate’s situation. Prickly Kay and laid-back Nate will capture your heart as surely as they did mine and their sex scenes were wonderfully sensual. Babette has filled the story with secondary characters as rich as her main characters and they provided a good foil for Kay and Nate’s journey. Any story that can make me both laugh and cry is a winner and CLEAR AS DAY did both.” ~Marguerite Labbe, Author of All Bets Are Off

“This is a sweet, compelling love story. The heroine, Kay, must face down her demons from the past to see the plain truth staring her in the face. Her ordered life really does have more room in it than she ever imagined. The journey Ms. James takes us on for Kay to make this discovery is delightfully sexy and filled with tender emotion. The main characters are believable and wonderfully flawed. Ms. James’ use of gentle, fluid prose makes this read a delightful journey.” ~Nena Clements, Author of Caught Unawares

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I’m just now entering the crazy world of promotion and my visit here with the James Gang is my first guest post ever! As a new author trying to get my name out into the world, I’ll be trying a variety of promotion options for Clear As Day’s release. I have more guest blogs lined up, and I have a blog at my website

I’m also on Twitter, Goodreads and Facebook and I’d love people to stop in and say hi.

I will be in an ad with nine other Wild Rose Press authors in the May 2012 Romantic Times Book Reviews magazine, and I will be signing Clear As Day at the RT Convention this April in Chicago. This will be my first RT and first signing, so I’m very excited.

9. What is your next project?

I’m currently working hard to finish and submit a sequel to Clear As Day, tentatively titled Love Burns. I love this couple, who are two of Nate and Kay’s friends, and I have enjoyed seeing their story come to life as they work through their personal trials and find their own happily ever after together. I also have two more stories in the early stages for other couples from this group of friends, and I also have a fantasy romance series in the works. Who needs sleep?

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

Never give up on your dreams and keep on writing. Clear As Day started life years ago as that little “story under the bed you love but can’t do anything with.” I’d take it out every now and then and dust it off, and smile, then sigh wistfully and file it back away. There were many times I felt like giving up, but I kept on writing new stories. Then, the day came I finally knew what to do with Clear As Day and how to really write Nate and Kay’s story. Because I didn’t give up, now I can share this story I love.

Thanks so much, Marcia, for letting me visit here and be part of the James Gang! Readers can find more about my stories and read excerpts at my website:

Thank you, Babette! My April James Gang interviewee will be multi-published author Elysa Hendricks, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!
