The James Gang

September James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of "James" in their names or in their books. My September interviewee is author Ann Everett, who has a character perfect for the James Gang!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why did you pick James as your character James Ridge's first name?

Ridge is named after his father, so I had to choose a name that would have been popular when his dad was born. James has been one of the most popular names for the last 100 years. That made it a safe choice…and I think James Ridge Cooper has a nice ring to it.

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write romance…contemporary, new adult, and my trilogy is light mystery with a kick of romance and humor.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

Say You’ll Never Love Me, is a contemporary romance and a companion book to Tell Me A Secret (TMAS) and Two Wrongs Make A Right (TWMAR). Each book is a stand-alone story, but secondary characters Jared Sloan in TMAS, and Raynebeaux Starr in TWMAR, were so popular I gave them their own love story. Here’s the blurb from their romance, Say You’ll Never Love Me.

Sometimes, all it takes…
Raynebeaux Starr's life is damn near perfect. She has wonderful friends. An interesting career. A man when she wants and none when she doesn't, thank you very much. But when tragedy strikes and she’s named guardian to her six-year-old niece, her world is turned upside down. She finds herself alone in a new town with a small child, no parenting skills and desperate for guidance. Until she meets Father Jared Sloan. The sexiest minister she's ever seen. He is kind, patient and a literal God-send. If only she could stop having unholy thoughts about him!

…is one little lie,
Jared Sloan's love life is a disaster. He has one girlfriend he can't shake, and an ex-fiancée on his doorstep wanting him back. As if things weren't complicated enough, he encounters what must be a fallen angel in a church parking lot. Little does he know when she mistakes him for a minister and agrees to counseling, she would be unlike anyone he's ever known. He wants to be the kind of man she can trust. He also wants to taste her so bad it hurts.

…to lead you to the truth.
Can Jared confess his deception and convince Raynie there is such a thing as happily-ever-after? Or will his deceit only confirm her belief that fairy-tale endings don't exist in the real world. Especially not in Lubbock, Texas.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

Always a happily-ever-after, of course…and all of my books have humor…and steamy scenes. I try to concentrate on the plot as much as the romance, so that the story will be more than just two characters trying to get into each other’s pants. There is that…but hopefully with an interesting journey. Oh, and they are all set in Texas.

My tagline reads: Sass, Sizzle, Suspense…Texas Style.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Actually, my WIP (Work-in-Progress) has two of my favorite characters. Hopefully the book will be released in the fall. A short tagline would read: Welcome to Bluebird, Texas, where a socially inept girl meets an ex-con.

However, I have a favorite character in each book. Usually the odd/quirky one who steals every scene they’re in. They tend to become reader favorites, too.

Maggie in Tell Me A Secret, has issues and avoids men. Raynebeaux Starr in Two Wrongs Make A Right, reads tarot cards. Mr. Remmus in Say You’ll Never Love Me, is the next-door neighbor who borrows a cup of whiskey each day. In my mystery trilogy, I love Synola Harper, who writes hangtags for a jeans company.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

I like the idea that something I wrote…my words…will still be around long after I’m Laid Out And Candle Lit. See how I worked the title of my first novel into my answer!! I just couldn’t resist. But…the possibility of someone reading one of my books fifty years from now gives me a sense of peace and pride.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve won several awards for short stories and novels. My most treasured was winning the North East Texas Writers Organization’s First Chapter Contest for Tell Me A Secret. Why? Because it was judged by two New York agents, and…it had a nice cash prize!

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I do a ton of promotion. Heck, I even speak at conferences and workshops about marketing. I have giveaways, paid promotions, social media, cover reveals, blog tours, review blitzes, book signings, local TV interviews, and back matter with sample chapters in all my books. I also have an email list I’m building. AND…blogs like yours!

9. What is your next project?

I’m almost finished with my seventh romance novel. Should be released in the next few months. After that, I have a non-fiction book I will be working on to share what I’ve learned about self-publishing and marketing…what’s worked for me.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

I love quotes. One of my favorites is:

Boys fall in love with what they see.
Girls fall in love with what they hear.
That’s why boys lie and girls wear makeup.

Marcia, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity to share my work on your site. I love hearing from readers and other writers, so I hope they will contact me personally if they have something to share about their own writing/reading journey.
