The James Gang

January James Gang Interview

Each month, I interview authors or publishing insiders who have some form of “James” in their names or in their books. My January interviewee is author Alina K. Field, who has a character named “James” in her historical romance series!

1. Let’s get the most important question asked first: Why James? That is, why did you pick that name for James Everly, Viscount Bakeley, the hero of your Regency romance, The Viscount’s Seduction, Book Two in your Sons of the Spy Lord series?

Picking names is SO hard for me. I puzzle my way through names until I find one that feels right, and this one does. This James is the reliable, responsible, one might say boring heir to a title, until the heroine shows up to disrupt his life, of course!

James is one of those names that comes off as very formal and steeped in history, until you start fiddling with it, turning a character into a friendly Jim, an endearing Jimmy, or a rascally Jamie. I’m also pretty fond of it because I’m married to a James!

2. What fiction genre(s) and/or sub-genre(s) do you write?

I write historical romance set in the late Regency and late Georgian era.

3. Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release is The Rogue’s Last Scandal, Book Three in the Sons of the Spy Lord series, and this hero happens to be a Charles, or, since he’s a rogue, a Charley. Here’s the blurb:

Like any good rogue, he was after a lady.

Saving a young heiress from wedding a scoundrel might just ease Charley Everly’s boredom with his current assignment. He’s been looking for a lady: beautiful, rich, Spanish, and the key to a traitor.

Could Grace Kingsley be the one?

Falling—literally—into the arms of the ton’s most outrageous rogue seems a risky path of escape, but Maria Graciela Kingsley y Romero has no other choice. Only the great Earl of Shaldon can help her, and he is not to be found.

So his son will have to do.

4. Is there a core story and/or a theme(s) in your books?

All of my books are about healing the past and finding family.

5. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why?

Annabelle Harris (who becomes Lady Hackwell) from my short novel, Bella’s Band, keeps popping up in later stories. She’s a strong, compassionate woman who has a true partnership with her husband.

6. What do you enjoy most about being an author?

The best moments are those rare times when I’m fully immersed in the story and the words are flowing.

7. Do you have any awards, reviews or kudos you’d like to tell us about?

My very first novella, “Rosalyn’s Ring,” won first place in the Book Buyer’s Best contest’s novella category. Other books have been finalists for the RONE award and the National Readers’ Choice award.

8. How do you promote your books and your author brand?

I blog at my website once a week, often about topics I’m researching for a story or about other authors’ books. I try to reach out to readers via Facebook, Twitter and my newsletter, and do an occasional book signing. Ultimately, though, I believe the best promo is getting that next book out!

9. What is your next project?

I’m getting The Counterfeit Lady, Book Four in this series, ready for an editing deadline. This fourth and last child of the spy lord is actually not a son, but a daughter! Hope my readers don’t mind!

Plus, I’m working on a Leap Day novella set in 1820, and then to resume writing Book Five of the series.

10. Do you have a bit of wisdom you’d like to impart or a favorite quote?

From Winston Churchill: Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.
